Careem, the popular ride-sharing platform, will suspend its ride-sharing operations in Pakistan starting July 18, 2025, after nearly 10 years of service. CEO Mudassir Sheikha cited macroeconomic challenges, rising competition, and global capital constraints as key reasons behind the tough decision.

Key Highlights:

  • Launch & Impact: Careem began operations in October 2015, becoming a vital transport and income source for millions. It also played a major role in advancing digital infrastructure and payment systems in Pakistan.

  • Legacy: The company empowered thousands of drivers (“captains”) and laid the groundwork for other digital ventures in the country.

  • Future Plans: Careem isn’t leaving Pakistan entirely. It will pivot to Careem Technologies, focusing on its “Everything App”—offering services like food delivery, groceries, and digital payments.

  • Team & Hiring: Nearly 400 employees are currently in Pakistan, with 100+ new roles and an expanded graduate program planned.

  • Customer Support: Wallet refund instructions will be shared. Careem Care will remain operational until September 18, 2025, for any unresolved matters.

Despite ending its ride-sharing chapter, Careem is shifting gears to continue shaping Pakistan’s digital economy.
